Pull Up a Chair to the Table

The Kitchen Table Foundation exists to strengthen the people behind the badge, the turnout gear, the uniform, and the radio. We connect the fire service, first responders, and their families to real community and support. Around the table we listen, we learn, and we look out for one another.

It all started with guys eating some wings

This whole thing started because one guy went to a restaurant and ate some wings and he posted it on Facebook. Two other guys commented on how good they looked and asked why they hadn’t been invited. Then a fourth chimed in wondering when a meet up was going to happen. So, they scheduled a lunch.

At the lunch the guys were able to talk about anything and everything. They had a great time and didn’t complain or whine. They just enjoyed each other’s company. They drank beer and smoked cigars. They shared about the trials and struggles that they were each going through and offered support to one another.

They didn’t mean for it to happen, it just happened organically. When that first lunch meeting was over, they knew that what had taken place that day was something special and desperately needed amongst the fire service. They made a plan that day to spread the word. They wanted to get as many people as they could to experience what they had that first day. It was important to them that they include the fire service and first responders.

They then set a date a month out and everyone invited everyone they could. Approximately 35 people showed up. People came from 2 hours away to be apart of The Kitchen Table. Through the support of many businesses like The Local Tavern, MySaline, Firefighters First Credit Union, Service Restoration, and Outlaw Beer, made this all possible. In addition to the support of many of our fellow first responders, including the First In Fire Conference and the Little Rock Memorial 9/11 Stair Climb, they were able to have a great time and offer several giveaways.

Firefighter Stephen Adams said “The first time I realized how important what we did was, during that second meet up. I saw retired firefighters mentoring rookies. I saw people sharing stories about things they had experienced or things that they were going through. I saw people realize that they were not alone and, in fact, other people had gone through similar things. As Ted Lasso said ‘there’s one thing worse than being sad, it’s being alone and sad’ and nobody was alone that day.”

Our Mission

The Kitchen Table Foundation exists to strengthen the brotherhood and sisterhood of the fire service and first responders. We provide a place for first responders to gather, break bread, and find connection through camaraderie, shared experience, and support. Rooted in tradition, built on trust, and driven by service, we aim to uphold the mental and emotional well-being of those who run toward the call

Our Vision

The Kitchen Table Foundation envisions a national community in which every first responder is recognized, supported, and empowered – where connection overcomes isolation, and where the enduring values of service, sacrifice, and solidarity are upheld through every season of the job and beyond.

What’s the meaning of The Kitchen Table?

“There is no rank at the kitchen table – one of the first things I was told when I sat down at a kitchen table in the fire station. It’s the place where everyone has an equal voice and everyone is included. To be truly included, everyone must have the ability to be themselves. The kitchen table provides for that.

The kitchen table is legendary. All of the world’s problems, and all of the problems of the fire department have been discussed and solved at these tables around the country.

The kitchen table provides a place where there’s no expectations – no expectations to give anything, no expectations to do anything. It’s just a place to come be yourself. I’ve sat at the kitchen table for 10 years at fire stations and I’ve seen a multitude of problems solved there. Small problems like what’s for dinner that night and big problems like how to handle issues with marriages, finances, kids, and spirituality.

It’s an important place for firefighters, even sacred. We hope to provide a similar environment once a month for all first responders. We want them to experience the safety and camaraderie that exists at that table.”
